If you’re planning a trip to Northeast Tennessee and looking for the perfect place to stay, I recently returned from an incredible four-night stay at the Carnegie Hotel in Johnson City, TN. My visit coincided with the inaugural OWAA Field Fest, and after action-packed days of outdoor adventures, the boutique hotel experience was exactly what I needed. Stick around—I’ll explore the hotel’s history and amenities and share my personal takeaways, including the pros and cons.

Location and Parking
Address: 1216 West State of Franklin Road
The Carnegie Hotel sits across from East Tennessee State University and is just 1.5 miles from downtown Johnson City. While I would have preferred it to be right in the heart of downtown, its proximity to the iconic Pal’s restaurant, just two doors down, more than made up for it.
One of the best parts? Parking is completely free! There are spots outside the front entrance, additional parking around the restaurant side, and even more available in the parking garage behind the hotel.
Historical Charm
This 127-room boutique hotel is a gorgeous remake of the original 1891 Carnegie Hotel in Johnson City, which unfortunately burned down in 1905. The rich mahogany woodwork and antique furnishings bring that turn-of-the-century charm, and they’re perfectly mixed with the modern amenities we all want today.
Guest Room Experience
At the Carnegie Hotel, you can choose from a range of rooms—double Queen, King Deluxe, and even Executive and Presidential Suites. I stayed in the King Deluxe, a spacious 400-square-foot beauty!
The decor totally matched the hotel’s vibe, and the sleigh bed was so cozy! I usually struggle to get comfy in hotels, but not here. I slept like a log for all four nights. Maybe it was all the hiking and biking in East Tennessee, or maybe that bed just knew how to treat a tired traveler right.
It was bright, with two big windows letting in tons of natural light. At night, several lamps, including this cute Tiffany-style one, glowed in the room.
The bathroom was delightfully large, with spacious granite countertops, two sinks, and a separate soaking tub and shower. There was even a bathroom scale for those keeping an eye on their weight.
In-room amenities included an iron and ironing board, refrigerator, hairdryer, coffeemaker, bathroom scale, in-room safe, desk, couch, TV, alarm clock, and complimentary Wi-Fi.
The only downside of my guest room was the thermostat—it was a bit finicky, and I struggled to keep the temperature just right. I’m not sure if it was just my room or if others had the same issue. But, overall, I loved my room.
Hotel Dining
The on-site restaurant, Wellington’s, serves Southern cuisine. There is also a bar/lounge and in-room dining available for breakfast and lunch. I didn’t have a chance to eat at the restaurant itself, but they did cater our conference meals, and everything was delish!

Final Thoughts
All in all, my stay at the Carnegie Hotel in Johnson City, Tennessee, was just what I needed. I’d definitely recommend it to anyone visiting Northeast Tennessee. Happy travels!
Where to Eat Nearby
- Label Restaurant (downtown) – Sushi, burgers and steaks. (I can vouch for the burgers!)
- Juan Siao (downtown) – Asian Mexican fusion
- Southern Craft (downtown) – Southern BBQ
- Pal’s Sudden Service – This drive-through eatery is practically next door, so you can pop over for breakfast, a meal, or a snack anytime. Also, it’s good for the ‘gram. (There’s a Wendy’s between this and the hotel too.)
