If you’re looking for a hotel in Roanoke that blends rich history, modern comfort, and a prime location, Hotel Roanoke is the place to be. Originally a classic railroad hotel, it now boasts beautifully renovated luxury accommodations in downtown Roanoke, making it the perfect home base for exploring all that Roanoke and Virginia’s Blue Ridge offer.
A Little History
The Norfolk and Western Railway built the Hotel Roanoke in 1882 when Roanoke was still the small town of Big Lick. Resting on a hill where a wheat field once stood, the hotel was designed to stand out—and even today, its location makes it a recognizable part of the city’s skyline.
Arrival Experience
With its spot on a hill and eye-catching Tudor-style architecture, the Hotel Roanoke was very impressive from the outside. But, as soon as I stepped inside, the rich, warm woodwork stopped me in my tracks. The lobby has all the charm you’d expect from a historic train hotel, but thanks to recent renovations, it also has a modern vibe. It’s elegant without feeling stuffy.
The staff couldn’t have been friendlier, from the front desk to the bellhops and valet. Every time I walked through the front door, someone was there to open it with a smile and a cheerful greeting.
My Guest Room Experience
I couldn’t have been happier with my deluxe queen guest room. The soft glow of light around the beds and the gorgeous wallpaper really gave the room a luxurious feel. The bed was pure bliss—the perfect spot to unwind after a long day of exploring.
The room was spacious, with a comfy lounge chair, a great workspace, and a big widescreen TV. As a tea lover, I was pleasantly surprised to find Stash teas instead of the usual plain options—such a nice touch!
The bathroom had a soothing rainfall showerhead and some lovely Gilchrist & Soames bath products—perfect for a little pampering.
The view was also pretty great, looking out over the courtyard with the mountains in the distance. It was a perfect reminder of how close the Blue Ridge Parkway is.
Exploring the Hotel and Amenities
There are plenty of great restaurants near Hotel Roanoke, but you don’t have to go far if you’re hungry. You can grab a pastry and a Starbucks drink at STEAM Coffee + Eatery or enjoy a full breakfast or lunch buffet in the Regency Room (and don’t miss their Sunday brunch buffet!). For something more casual, the 1882 Lobby Bar is perfect for a drink and a quick bite. And if you’re in the mood for something special, the historic Pine Room offers a chef-driven open kitchen experience—it’s been everything from a writing room to a WWII Officer’s Club to a pub over the years!
If you’re looking for ways to relax beyond dining, the hotel has you covered. Guests can take a dip in the outdoor pool (with seasonal poolside service), unwind in the whirlpool or sauna, book a rejuvenating treatment at the spa, or get in a workout at the fitness center.
Location: Right in the Heart of Roanoke
One of the best parts of staying at Hotel Roanoke is the location. A pedestrian bridge (with great views!) connects the hotel to the heart of the city, making it easy to explore. The Taubman Museum of Art and Center in the Square—home to the Pinball Museum, Starcade, and the Science Museum—are just a short walk away. And if you’re up for a scenic drive, the Blue Ridge Parkway is only a few minutes away by car.
My Overall Experience at Hotel Roanoke
I loved Hotel Roanoke! It has all the charm of a historic hotel, but the 2024 multi-million dollar renovations have really taken it to a whole new level of luxury, style, and comfort. Definitely worth the stay!
Tips For Your Stay
- Address: 110 Shenandoah Ave NW Roanoke, VA 24016

- On-site Amenities: Restaurant (on-site dining and room service), fitness center, spa, outdoor pool.

If, like me, you prefer to skip valet, be prepared for a bit of an uphill trek from the parking lot to the hotel. A smart move is to drop off your luggage at the front desk before parking, but I opted to haul my bags up the hill—consider it a little bonus workout!

- Love Trains? Ask for a room with a railroad view!
- Pedestrian Bridge: Take the enclosed walkway over the railroad right into the heart of downtown Roanoke.
- Fall Leaf Peepers: Roanoke is stunning when the leaves start to turn, and Hotel Roanoke makes an excellent base for exploring the Blue Ridge Mountains. (Don’t miss Treetop Quest Explore Park.)
The Hotel Roanoke is a Curio Collection by HIlton property. Check availability, rates and book your stay.
