The Dunhill Hotel in uptown Charlotte has a special charm I’ve never experienced anywhere else. I can’t quite put my finger on it, but there’s a quiet elegance and sophistication that is uncharacteristic of a typical upscale boutique hotel.
And here’s the thing… it could be stiff and standoffish because it is that special, but the hotel is far from full of itself, and because of that, I fell in love with it.
I also learned that the Dunhill Hotel is part of the Historic Hotels of America program. Its combination of historic significance, authenticity, architectural integrity and sense of place has earned it the prestigious distinction.
I was so charmed by the hotel and the passion and respect the management has for the hotel’s yesterdays, that I am anxious to keep visiting other Historic Hotels of America properties. But for now, let’s talk about this one – the Dunhill Hotel.
When the Dunhill Hotel opened as the Mayfair Manor in late 1929 with 100 rooms, half were used for apartments in order to survive the economic depression. Ultimately in the 1980’s, the hotel was repurchased and refurbished into 60 rooms to allow for the addition of individual bathrooms.
I felt like I was cheating time upon walking into the Dunhill Hotel lobby, but it was only a sneak peek of what I was to find in my guest room. Take a look at the old-time grandeur! You’ve fallen in love with it now too, haven’t you?
To be in line with the philosophy of “It’s great to be historic; it’s never ok to be old,” the Dunhill Hotel remains true to its original intent of catering to the modern traveler with the installation of new charging stations in each room, a Keurig coffee maker, bottled water in the fridge, special chocolates, robes and an umbrella for guests to use during their stay.
Guests will also enjoy reading about the history of the Dunhill Hotel. What a treasure!
If you have the chance to dine in the Asbury restaurant, you’ll enjoy modern farm to table interpretations of Southern classics. Delicious!
The Dunhill Hotel is a special gem among Charlotte hotels. It has all the modern amenities you’d need while preserving its distinctive historical integrity. It’s more than worthy of the Historic Hotels of America plaque it proudly displays, and it boasts a memorable guest experience with an attentive and warm staff.

We are planning a visit to Charlotte what a great place to stay I will definitely consider a stay here looks so nice and perfect for us traveling as a couple.
This is such a charming hotel without feeling really ‘old’ as some historical hotels can feel (in a not so charming way). I love visiting inns with a soul like this one.
This hotel looks very nice. I would love to stay there
I don’t think I have ever stay in any of the Historic Hotels of America. This one looks really nice and I know I would love the ambiance. If I ever make it to Charlotte you know I will be stopping by to at least see it (My niece would be upset if I stayed there and not with her!) I definitely would eat at least one meal there!
What a beautiful place to stay and visit! This hotel looks so upscale and beautifully decorated. The food looks delicious, too! What a nice getaway this would be for myself and my husband!
It looks beautiful and comfortable. It would be a great choice for a Charlotte visit.
I like the added touches of a hotel like this, such as the decorative headboards in the rooms.
I admit it – I’ve fallen in love! I’ve visited downtown Charlotte many, many times, but have never seen this place. The next time we spend the night in town, I’m booking this for the hubs and me. And that food – yum!

What a nice looking hotel to stay at!! I know staying at a good hotel makes any visit to any city seem better.
Very nice hotel, it looks very clean and fresh for being a historic hotels. In Scotland, most historic hotels are kept as is and aren’t modernized in any way, which is okay, but a lot more people prefer modern. Great post and I hope you had a lovely stay as I’m sure you did 🙂
That is such a pretty hotel. I love the old school charm it has. Staying at historical hotels is always my favorite when I travel. I wish there were more of them around.
We have always wanted to live in Charlotte, but since we have not been able to move there the next best thing is for a good visit and now I know where to stay next time we come. That hotel looks absolutely amazing.
Dunhill Hotel is so pretty! I love all the old-style finishings, colors, and the like. It’s like stepping back in time.
The hotel looks beautiful! I would love to stay there. It looks well preserved, elegant and understated. My husband used to live in Charlotte years before l met him and he always spoke highly of the city. I think l would like it 🙂 . Nice pictures too.
It kind of reminds me of the hotel I stayed in in New York last summer, although right now the name escapes me. I love that black mirror.
I love staying at historic hotels like this one. They have so much more charm than some hotels you stay at, where everything is the same as it would be in any other city.
Love everything about what the Dunhill stands for. It reminds me a bit of a hotel I stayed at in Portland, Oregon, which I believe is also a historic old building made modern. I’ve never been to Charlotte, but it looks like an amazing city to visit. Lots of old world charm and with a hotel these lovely to stay at, a perfect place to visit. Thanks for sharing this with us all! Sounds like you thoroughly enjoyed every minute.

Wow, it’s truly gorgeous. I would have thought it’d be old & stuffy, kind of like a rich old aunt’s house. It’s the perfect balance of historic and modern.

I am loving the look of this hotel! I do love older buildings, even though the buildings in America aren’t terribly THAT old. 😉

This looks like a lovely place to stay, I hope I get to one day x
Looks like the perfect place for a get away. I love historic places, they are all so unique with their own story.
I like that they have chosen to keep the massive wood furniture and not replace it with cheap MDF one. That always shows a sign of care for the guests. That bar looks fantastic, I would like to have a drink there, in the evening.
I love how rustic this looks. And the food!!!
